To a painter light is all important. Imagine trying to paint a realistic painting in a studio with only red lights on your canvas.
To a much lesser degree painters have to deal with seasonal changes in the color and intensity of light. Imagine white paint outside on a sunny day in the summer compared to white paint inside on a cloudy day in the winter. The winter white is much bluer and darker.
Although my studio has the preferred "North Light" and a sky light as well as lighting that is color balanced, my lighting is cooler and darker this time of year. So part of an artist's job is to learn to notice and correct for changes in the light. Interesting challenge!

Texas Gold, oil on travertine, 22" x 37"
The horizon lines and trees as well as the shape of the horse's head dictated the composition of this piece. It was fun playing with perspective.
In search of the perfect painting (my constant quest) I've had a really fun month. I hope you enjoy the results! The colors and changes of Fall inspire me to really look at, and attempt to commit to memory the amazing goings on around me. It's fodder for future paintings, maybe the perfect one.
I finished these three new paintings this month. Please take a look. I hope you enjoy them!

Woodland Deer, Oil on marble, 23" x 13"
"In this wonderful piece of marble I found a magical environment just suited for deer. The rest was sheer fun, painting the deer and bringing out the woodland.
"When I first saw this colorful piece of slate I saw the horse's head in sharp relief. The planes of the stone dictated the rest of the scene. The colors were already there." Information at Southwest Roundup Studio Gallery
What You Up To?,oil on travertine, 16" x 16"
I like to paint the various poses showing the interactions of mares and foals. Foals (and children) are always up to something as you can see in this painting on travertine. In this playful scene, the trees and bushes I saw in the stone were just waiting for a couple of horses." Information at B & R Gallery
It's been an exciting month! The prestigious Western Art and Architecture magazine picked me as "One to watch" and published my work in the latest edition (Fall/Winter 2011). Click here to see the article.

Red Rock Canyon Cows, oil on granite, 18" x 26.5"
"Composition fascinates me. This stone has a great pattern that suggested a red canyon with trees and a stream. Compositionally, I like the way the second cow pulls the eye back from the first cow's moo. Cows make me feel patient."
It has been a good month with several exciting new paintings, two of which sold as they were finished.
Discovery of beautiful new stones makes the ideas of future paintings exciting. A few weeks ago I found some really wonderful granite. It has wonderful greens, golds and reds. I also found some amazingly colored slate. I hope to have examples in the next newsletter.

Free Lunch, oil on onyx, 16.5" x 26"
"On a good day a bear hardly has to reach for a salmon, there are so many working their way upstream. This piece of onyx had white water, rocky ground and clouds."
"Shades of grey in the upper left and of browns and golds in the rest made for an interesting composition in this piece of granite. The main figure was obvious right away."
"I like colorful paints and this one fit right in the ridges of the stone. The trees on the left are the original stone color. This painting just sold."
