Stone Art Gallery Newsletter, August 2011

Welcome to my August Newsletter,

Please take a look at my three new paintings on stone (below).

The movie, "The Cave of Forgotten Dreams", inspired me to try a painting in the style of the original masters. It was about Chauvet Cave in southern France, home to hundreds of pristine Paleolithic artworks. Over 30,000 years old, they are the oldest known pictures created by humans and show at least 13 different species of animals, including horses, cattle, lions and bears. I found a piece of travertine with active patterns and am trying my hand at the cave style. It's almost finished.

You can see my "cave painting" at facebook.com/stoneartgallery. Please tell me what you think of it.

A few weeks ago I found some really wonderful granite and have started preping it for painting. It has wonderful greens, golds and reds. I hope to have an example by the next newsletter.

These and other paintings may be seen on my website: susanvonborstel.com.

Cows World, oil on marble, 15" x 19"

I rarely keep one of my paintings. This one is tempting because it makes me smile and relax.

Gentle Soul, oil on travertine, 18" x 18"

Wispy patterns and a calm feeling became the horse's mane and attitude in this piece of colorful travertine.
To me it depicts "horseness".

Quail Family, oil on travertine, 12" x 12"

"I wanted to paint California quail. They hide in the brush so I wondered how I could make them show up and look realistic while being true to their shy nature. This piece of reddish travertine had good brush shapes and some grey crystals that harmonized with the colors of quail so I gave it a go."
